2 Corinthians – Apocalypse Now

December 17, 2017

Paul shares a fascinating story of ascending into heaven and receiving special knowledge he cannot reveal. While this sort of story may seem quite unique to most readers, it would have been compared with other ascension stories mentioned in the apocalyptic literature of that day. That isn’t to say that Paul’s story is not true or is a copy, because it is actually a fascinating contrast. Instead of returning from paradise with power and victory, Paul is tormented by a messenger of Satan. While Paul pleads with God to have this thorn removed, God does not; rather he encourages Paul to rely upon grace and know that he is being made perfect in weakness. Paul’s life mirrors that of Jesus for it was Jesus who was tempted by Satan and yet lived a life of weakness in order to obtain the ultimate victory over Satan.
